Local Horsewoman Wins Regional Horse Trial
Author: Doug Pelham

For Immediate Release, Please July 24, 2007 Contact: Cori Nichols (845) 616-3608 NorwegianWoodFrm@Aol.Com Local Equestrian Captures Blue Ribbon at Regional Horse Event Kerhonkson, NY, -- Cori Nichols, local horse rider, trainer and instructor, has returned from Old Chatham, NY with “that winning feeling,” having placed first in her division at the annual ENYDCTA Horse Trials on Sunday, July 15. The competition attracts riders from NY, MA, CT, NH, VT and ME, who compete over two days in tests of dressage, stadium jumping as well over a cross-country jumping course. She rode her 14.1 hand, 7-year old, self trained Connemara mare named EventPonies.Com, to victory amongst a field of 17 horses in the Senior Novice category. Nichols acquired “Blu Jay”, as the Irish-bred pony is called around the farm, as a 4-yr old from a Connemara breeder in nearby Gardiner. “She’d been ‘backed’,” Nichols says with a smirk, “but steering? None . .brakes? zippo. Athelticism, courage and wonderful gaits? All there. This is the most exciting part about training horses” she beams, “working with whatever raw material you have, and making the most of it. . . .enhancing the horse’s natural abilities, elegance and carriage.” Nichols trains every day, as is required for the many challenging aspects of Eventing (also known as Combined Training.) “No matter what level you’re competing at, you’re still having to work at all three components of the sport. The balance, elasticity and obedience of dressage; the acuity and adjustability for stadium jumping, and the courage, speed and endurance for cross county jumping.” She says she enjoys all the aspects almost equally, and that riding and training and building these skills together with a horse feel much like ‘pairs yoga’ to her . . . the goal is relaxation, harmony, and acceptance (“of each other!”) “I enjoy teaching so much, too, because I’m able to share this approach with my students . .both beginners and more accomplished riders, no matter what their discipline or specific interests or goals.” Plans for the rest of the summer? “Continue daily riding, teaching and training horses – both her own and those that stable with her on training-board. “We have a couple of very exciting young prospects right now, including a 3 year old, 12 hand pony that she says “has literally has jumped out of all but one field on the property . . . and I have rather tall fencing!” Nichols is also preparing several pleasure mounts for lease this fall. As for inspiration, Nichols credits her friend, the late Amanda Bader. “She was a great rider and a tough competitor, who worked harder than many of us put together.” “I’ll also continue to event into Autumn, when the season winds down, and then focus more on teaching, which, thanks to an indoor ring, can continue throughout the winter, so we’re ready for action in April when the fun starts all over.” For photos, information about lessons, training, boarding, clinics, or to arrange a visit to the farm, contact Cori Nichols at 616 3608 or visit the website at NorwegianWoodFarm.Com. * * * Photos: attaced: #1: Cori and EventPonies.Com receiving their First Place ribbon from ENYDCTA Horse Trials, along with a gift from a local tack shop. #2: Cori and EventPonies.Com, jumping cross country.
